Holika Dehan

Once upon a time there was a king named Hiranyakashipu in Satyuga who considered himself as God and used to make his subjects worship him. He used to kill those who refused to worship him, everyone considered that king to be God, after some time a supreme Vishnu devotee Prahlad was born.

He was engaged in the worship of Lord Vishnu since childhood and the king, who did not like him, tried to convince his son that he should consider him as God and worship him. But the devotee Prahlad was not allowed to worship anyone other than his Lord Vishnu. One day, seeing his son worshiping Lord Vishnu, he ordered his commander to kill the devotee Prahlad.

The commander obeyed his king and threw the devotee Prahlad from the top of the high mountain, but the devotee Prahlad kept on chanting Lord Vishnu so that by the grace of Lord Vishnu he remained safe and reached his home. The king was very surprised to see this, then that king called his sister Holika, who had a boon that fire could not harm him, the king ordered his sister to take the devotee Prahlad to ashes with him in the fire. By the order of the king, a wooden tower was made and Holika took the devotee Prahlad in her lap and sat on top of the tower.

After that the tower was set on fire, but the devotee Prahlad was engrossed in devotion to the most assured Lord, Holika was also waiting for her victory and the king’s order, as soon as the fire started getting fierce, Holika’s body also started burning. Holika’s boon was destroyed by the blessings of Lord Vishnu and Holika was burnt due to the penance of the devotee Prahlad. Since then we celebrate the festival of Holika Dahan with great pomp, whose purpose is to burn all our evils. This story teaches us that we should never be proud of our power and should not think bad for others.
